News / press release

Finnish Light Artist Kari Kola participates Island of Light Festival with his piece of light art called Frequencies. This monumental installation is generated to Smögen, to a site called Kläven. Kola utilizes various elements of the unique space to exhibit his work - Water and rocks give the light artwork a unique and mystical look. There is a soundscape composed by a Finnish Sound Designer Heikki Savolainen as a part of the installation.

Island of Light is an International Light Art Festival in the breathtaking beautiful Island of Smögen on the Swedish West Coast. To be experienced from the sea as well as from land, Island of Light, “in the middle of nowhere”, with the most beautiful surroundings, where the barren nature and pink granite rocks with still clear vestiges from the Ice Ages, meets the most modern technologies in the form of Light Art.

— I am extremely honored to be involved in the Island of Light Festival. This location is so motivating and inspiring. There are lots of interesting and beautiful places in Smögen, so it’s a perfect spot to create a Light Art Festival. I see lots of possibilities for the festival to  grow into an important international festival, says Kari Kola.

Island of Light Festival 12 - 15 September 2019 in Smögen

Over four evenings in September several nationally and internationally renowned light artists will light up the islands of Smögen and Hållö, creating a magical atmosphere where you, the visitor, will find yourself immersed at the center of an amazing experience. The unique rock formations, the famous pier and the narrow streets of Smögen, as well as the skies and the sea will form the backdrop for interactive light art, light installations and light projections of monumental proportions.

The Island of Light Festival was held for the first time last year and it attracted amazingly 30,000 people.
