Finnish Light Artist Kari Kola Creates Work of Light Art That Can Be Viewed from Two Continents in Istanbul, Turkey
Finnish Light Artist Kari Kola is invited to join the Istanbul Light Festival in Turkey which is set for November. Kola will create the main piece, Light Is Here, to Zorlu Center which includes four skyscrapers and a shopping mall. The ensemble of light can be experienced during 13th - 29th November in Istanbul.
Light Is Here, Kola’s work of light art, was first introduced on the 19th January, 2015 when it embraced the Unesco headquarters in Paris as the main piece of the Year of Light Opening Ceremony. - Unesco headquarters was the largest piece of light art in scale that I’ve worked with. Zorlu Center is significantly larger and to implement the piece into this destination is very challenging, yet at the same time, fascinating, says Kari Kola excited on his Istanbul ensemble of light art.
Light Is Here has a lot of nordic symbolism: cool color tones help to create the Aurora Borealis and a mystic northern landscape. -This piece is located in an interesting and unique geographical setting - Istanbul is the only city in the world that stands on two continents. My work can be viewed from both Europe and Asia, says Kari Kola on this massive artwork.
Zorlu Center is the second largest shopping center in Europe. Light Is Here requires nearly 700 light fixtures for its production. The piece is mostly built by a Finnish team of specialists. The technical team of the Istanbul Light Festival will assist in the construction of the artwork. - I will take my core crew from Finland. The schedule will be extremely tight, so I’m taking a special task force with me whose proficiency I can count on 100 per cent, states Kari Kola on his team.
To complement the piece of art, there is a multi-channel soundcape composed by Kari Kola and Kimmo Perkkiö (SF Sound Ltd.) especially for Light Is Here. Perkkiö acts as the Sound Manager in Kola’s Istanbul team.
