News/press release

Light Artist Kari Kola will exhibit his piece of light art, Light Is Here, on the island of Ilosaari in Joensuu on the 6th February, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Surrounding the piece, there will be a positive, upbeat light art event into which all locals are warmly welcomed to enjoy the light and spend time together.

— Our goal is to engage all Joensuu residents, including the refugees and immigrants, people of all origins, to join in doing something positive together, in other words, to participate in building this piece of light art, explains Light Artist Kari Kola on the idea of the event.

The 6th of February marks the end of the United Nations’ International Year of Light. Kari Kola ignited the theme year with his work Light Is Here in Paris a year ago, last January. Then Kola generated the piece to the Unesco Headquarters. Kari Kola created another version of the concept in Istanbul Light Festival in November 2015. Now a smaller scale version of the work is built on Ilosaari in Joensuu. This piece in Joensuu will simultaneously serve as Kari Kola’s 10-year jubilee work of art.

The central themes of Light Is Here stem from the Aurora Borealis and the sunrise. The piece is supported by a soundscape which is composed by Kimmo Perkkiö and Kari Kola. — The idea was to produce the piece in such locations where light is needed, both concretely and symbolically, states Kola on Light Is Here. The community event in February brings this light to Joensuu.
